The coin was issued during the reign of Queen Maria I for circulation in the then colony of Brazil. Maria I and Peter III (1777–1786) ruled jointly; Queen Maria I, known as “The Pious,” was the twenty-seventh monarch of Portugal. Born in 1734, she reigned from 1777 until her death in 1816 and was married to King Peter III.
