Coins of King José I (1750-1777)
The coins of King José I (1750-1777) reflect a period of profound administrative, economic and monetary reforms strongly shaped by the policies of the Marquis of Pombal. José I, known as “The Reformer”, was born in 1714 and became the twenty‑sixth King of Portugal, overseeing the modernization of the kingdom after the 1755 earthquake. During his reign, copper, silver and gold coins were issued, notably those bearing the legend IOSEPHUS I DEI GRATIA, as well as high‑quality mechanical‑minted pieces that illustrate the technical refinement of the Pombaline era.
