Coin of 1/4 Macuta, dated 1763, in copper, from the reign of King José I (1750–1777), Angola. Variant with 72 pearls, five pearls on the outer arches of the crown, simple cross, and joined “ET” in the legend. Classified as World Coins – Angola, KM#10. There are six to seven known variants, differing in the number of pearls on the crown and around the cross, as well as between a simple cross and a beaded cross. The variant with joined “ET” in the legend is, in my view, one of the scarcest. The 1/4 Macuta coin of 1763, in copper, from the reign of King José I, belongs to the group of coins ordered to be struck for circulation in the former Portuguese colony of Angola by King José I of Portugal (1750–1777), known as “the Reformer.” He was the twenty-sixth King of Portugal, born in 1714, and reigned from 1750 until his death in 1777. His wife was Queen Mariana Victoria of Bourbon.
