It was created by Decree No. 37274 of January 4, 1949, intended for circulation in the then colony of Cape Verde, part of Portuguese Africa. The Cape Verde archipelago was discovered by Diogo Gomes and António Nola in 1498 and was annexed by the Portuguese Empire in 1505. After more than four centuries of Portuguese rule, Cape Verde became independent in 1975.
