Coin issued under Decree No. 38,975 of October 31, 1952. 1 escudo coins dated between 1953 and 1968 were minted in bronze alloy (Cu 950 - Zn 30 - Sn 20), intended for circulation in the former Portuguese colony of Cape Verde. The Cape Verde archipelago was discovered by Diogo Gomes and António Nola in 1460, and in 1505 it was officially annexed to the Portuguese Empire. After more than four centuries under colonial rule, Cape Verde gained its independence in 1975.

It was created by Decree-Law No. 49,167 of August 4, 1969, and its issuance ceased under the terms of Decree-Law No. 267/81 of September 15, 1981. The total mintage across the various dates between 1971 and 1979 was 113,579,470 coins.
