Macau 50 Avos 1983 Nickel Brass, Macao Former Portuguese Colony 50 avos 1983, World Coins Macao KM#22. Coin created by Decree 49/81-Macau of December 17, to circulate in the former Portuguese colony of Macau, coins were minted in the Nickel Brass metal alloy (Cu 790 - Zn 200 - Ni 10), with dates from 1982 to 1985. The pataca was introduced in Macau and Portuguese Timor during the Portuguese colonial period, in 1894, as a unit of account. Initially, the unit corresponded to the Mexican peso, and replaced the Portuguese real with an exchange rate of one pataca was four hundred and fifty réis. The name pataca derives from the fact that the Portuguese always refer to the piece of eight as the Mexican pataca.
