The date 1876 is the second rarest in the 500 réis series of this reign, which gives it special numismatic interest. King D. Luís I (1861–1889) was known as the numismatist king, being one of the monarchs who most promoted coin collecting and numismatics in Portugal. Nicknamed “The Popular,” he was the thirty-third King of Portugal; he was born in 1838 and reigned from 1861 until his death in 1889. His wife was D. Maria Pia of Savoy
