50 centavos coin from 1948 in alpaca, from São Tomé and Príncipe, a former Portuguese colony, with design and engraving by Marcelino Norte de Almeida, minted at the Lisbon Mint in an alpaca alloy (Cu 610, Zn 200, Ni 190). It had a very limited mintage of only 80,000 pieces and was created by Decree No. 36,788 of March 11, 1948, to circulate in the then Portuguese colony of São Tomé and Príncipe. It is referenced in the international World Coins catalogue as Saint Thomas & Prince Island, KM#8.

The islands of São Tomé and Príncipe remained uninhabited until their discovery in 1470 by the Portuguese explorers João de Santarém and Pedro Escobar. Gradually colonized during the 16th century, they became an important commercial center within the context of Atlantic trade. São Tomé and Príncipe achieved independence in 1975.
