50 centavos coin from 1948 in alpaca, from São Tomé and Príncipe, a former Portuguese colony, with design and engraving by Marcelino Norte de Almeida, minted at the Lisbon Mint in an alpaca alloy (Cu 610, Zn 200, Ni 190). It had a very limited mintage of only 80,000 pieces and was created by Decree No. 36,788 of March 11, 1948, to circulate in the then Portuguese colony of São Tomé and Príncipe. It is referenced in the international World Coins catalogue as Saint Thomas & Prince Island, KM#8.

It was created by decree nº 38203 of March 13, 1951, and intended for circulation in the then-colony of São Tomé and Príncipe, part of Portuguese Africa. The islands of São Tomé and Príncipe remained uninhabited until they were discovered by the Portuguese explorers João de Santarém and Pedro Escobar in 1470. Gradually colonized by the Portuguese throughout the 16th century, they became an important trading center within the Atlantic trade network. São Tomé and Príncipe achieved independence in 1975.
