Coin issued by Decree 23833 of May 8, 1934, intended for circulation in the former colony of Portuguese India. The State of India was established in 1505, six years after the discovery of the sea route between Portugal and the Indian subcontinent. It served as an administrative framework for a network of forts, trading posts, and overseas colonies. The first Viceroy was Dom Francisco de Almeida, who set up his government in Cochin.
