António, Prior of Crato, (better known by the nickname of the Prior of Crato, the Fighter or the Independentist, due to the emphasis placed on the recovery of Portugal's independence), was the natural son of Infante D. Luís and grandson of Manuel I, having been one of the pretenders to the Portuguese throne during the succession crisis of 1580. He was acclaimed king of Portugal, on the island of Terceira in the Azores, but never reached the throne of Portugal.
