Commemorative PROOF Coins (Escudo Issues)
The Commemorative PROOF Coins are special issues produced by the Portuguese Mint (INCM) between 1977 and 2001 in Escudos, created for high‑grade numismatic collecting. These commemorative coins were minted in several metal alloys, including cupronickel, silver and, in some limited editions, gold PROOF. The PROOF finish is characterised by mirror‑polished fields and frosted reliefs, achieved through a highly controlled and carefully handled production process. All PROOF issues were released in official INCM cases or folders and accompanied by certificates of authenticity. This category includes the commemorative PROOF coins in Escudos that do not belong to the Portuguese Discoveries thematic series.
