50 Centavos Coins 1912–1926

The 50 Centavos coins issued by the Portuguese Republic between 1912 and 1926 comprise two distinct systems that reflect the monetary developments of the early Republican period. The first system includes the silver issues of 1912, 1913, 1914 and 1916, created under the Decree with force of Law of May 22, 1911 and Law 220 of July 30, 1911, later withdrawn by Decree‑Law 19871 of June 9, 1931. The second system, in bronze‑aluminium, covers the 1924, 1925 and 1926 issues, created by Decree 9719 of May 23, 1924 and withdrawn under Decree‑Law 20392 of October 14, 1931. Within this latter system, a notable highlight is the rare 1926 variety struck using a reused 1925 die, a discovery researched by Portugal Moedas and published in Revista MOEDA – Volume 4 (2025)
