It was the second commemorative coin to be minted after the establishment of the Republic. The first was the 5th of October 1910 escudo. This 10 Escudos (10$00) coin from 1928, dedicated to the "Battle of Ourique", was created by Decree-Law No. 15,386, dated April 18, 1928, with a mintage of 200,000 coins. The decree was issued eight days before António de Oliveira Salazar entered the government.
