Coins of Gallienus (AD 253–268)
Coins of Gallienus, emperor during the turbulent Crisis of the Third Century, reflect a period of political instability, military pressure and significant monetary reforms. Minted between AD 253 and 268, they consist mainly of antoniniani and bronze issues struck in several imperial and provincial mints, featuring stylized portraits, protective deities, military themes and legends celebrating imperial authority. Gallienus’ coinage is especially noted for the famous series dedicated to animals associated with the gods, as well as for the wide variety of types and inscriptions characteristic of his reign.
