They are commemorative collection coins alluding to the Portuguese Discoveries issued between 1987 and 2001 in Escudos, issued by the Imprensa Nacional-Casa da Moeda (INCM). In total, there are 44 coins, divided into 11 series of 4 themed coins that chronologically mark the most significant episodes of the Portuguese Discoveries. (these 11 series of Discovery coins had all issues minted in various metal alloys, these being cupronickel, BNC Silver, PROOF Silver, PROOF Gold and some issues in palladium and platinum, and the cupronickel coins came out without their own packaging and all issues Specials in precious metals were launched in their own wallets or cases and respective certificates of authenticity.
